Question by night_train_to_memphis: Is there a photo scanner that’s good for scanning negatives of odd sizes?

The size in mind is about three and nine-sixteenths inches by two and seven-sixteenths inches. If not, are there any tricks I can use like putting a mirror on top of it, scanning it as a photo, and taking a negative of the negative?

Even the most basic or obvious suggestions are welcome.

If you are in the process of searching for a photo scanner and you are not really sure which scanner to buy, then you just have to listen to some good advice on the subject that will make the process of researching and buying a scanner a lot easier. Using a portable scanner can significantly improve your system of managing digital input, including when the safeguarding of crucial documentation is a major consideration. Before buying a portable scanning solution, we suggest that you take a look at these guidelines.

Just like every sort of state-of-the-art equipment out there, handheld scanners have been designed to be a lot more accessible and user-friendly. These scanners are useful for most of your day-to-day scanning requirements, like photographs you don’t want to risk losing, checks or bank statements, etc. In just a few short moments they produce unbelievable scanning clarity in formats ranging from images to text. In today’s market, the price of a photo scanner is certainly worth the expense both for companies and individuals.

One of the most popular qualities of mobile scanners like these is the great convenience of them wherever and whenever you need them. Every scanner comes furnished with a custom scanning program that will allow you to scan printed documents and pictures alike and save the image or data in a number of different ways. For instance, with id cards, the system has the ability to separate the ‘snapshot’ of the card, the cardholder’s photo and signature, and all the text of the id and then sort it into useable data and image fields that can be saved to your choice of software.

Prior to buying a photo scanner we advise you to go through the following list of tips: (1) clarify what you will be scanning; (2) conduct a web search for suitable scanners; (3) compare the technical specifications of each scanner; (4) do a little background research on the company itself and read reviews by customers of the scanner; (5) establish freight charges and procedures for returns.

Question by ForestFairy: What is the FASTEST “photo” scanner on the market?

What is the FASTEST “photo” scanner on the market? For home use. For scanning a large amount of photos.

I know can go to places like Target to do this. I just prefer to have my own.
I didn’t want a all-in-one scanner. I was hoping there was something that was only for photo scanning. Like Target has, but for personal use.

Hello ForestFairy:

If you’re looking for a “flatbed scanner” to scan prints, there are many factors to consider. “Fastest” is a subjective term, because–for starters–you haven’t even mentioned how much you want to spend. As for speed itself; how fast a flat bed scanner is, is also “subject” to many factors.

Doing a Yahoo! search using the keywords “What is the fastest flatbed scanner in the market?” yielded many links that you might want to take a look at:

http://ca.search.yahoo.com/search?p=What+is+the+fastest+flatbed+scanner+in+the+market%3F&toggle=1&cop=mss&ei=UTF-8&fr=yfp-t-715

Again–the first factor is “how much do you have to spend?”

As for scanning a large amount of photos–there’s really no way to do them but one at a time. Unlike dedicated scanners for slides and negatives, there’s no “photo feeder” that I know of, for flatbed scanners.

And getting back to speed… I’ve found that even the fastest scanner is subject to the speed (processing power) of the computer it’s hooked up to. Furthermore, speed is also affected by the resolution at which your scanning the photo.

Example–I’ve found that scanning a 4×6 or 5×7 print at 150 to 300 dpi is pretty fast. However–scanning an 8×10 at 600 dpi slows down the process significantly. Scanning a large print at 1200 dpi slows things down to a crawl.

Like most things technological–you may find that faster speed comes with a (usually “higher”) price, so first determine how much you’re willing to spend, and then find a flatbed scanner within your range. I myself have been using a Hewlett-Packard flatbed scanner for years (and I’ve found them to be pretty reliablle, like their laser printers).

Hope this helps.

Question by Bright: Can anyone suggest a good All in one photo, scanner, copier, fax with a scanner that is 11 x 14 or better?

I have an HP Photosmart All in one 7100 that is dying. I need an all in one that can print decent photos, but has a scanner 11 x 14 or bigger? I’m thinking maybe an officejet printer? I would like one with an auto document feeder, if possible. Anyone have any suggestions? Please give model #’s.

If you’re not worried about cost of operating as far as supplies and stuff, stay with HP. However, just a helpful bit of info, Kodak supplies are much less expensive. A pack of toner/ink/whatever for HP printers will usually run about 30-40% more than the same part for Kodak scanners/printers. Also, Kodak is the picture company so their quality regarding photos and photo paper, etc does not lack compared to HP’s.

I guess I am just weird and have no use for a scanner, so i do not own one. However, my mom and a couple of my sisters are all into the photo printing and sharing thing and they all have Kodak All-in-Ones. Not sure of model numbers, sorry.
