Question by ForestFairy: What is the FASTEST “photo” scanner on the market?
What is the FASTEST “photo” scanner on the market? For home use. For scanning a large amount of photos.
I know can go to places like Target to do this. I just prefer to have my own.
I didn’t want a all-in-one scanner. I was hoping there was something that was only for photo scanning. Like Target has, but for personal use.

Hello ForestFairy:
If you’re looking for a “flatbed scanner” to scan prints, there are many factors to consider. “Fastest” is a subjective term, because–for starters–you haven’t even mentioned how much you want to spend. As for speed itself; how fast a flat bed scanner is, is also “subject” to many factors.
Doing a Yahoo! search using the keywords “What is the fastest flatbed scanner in the market?” yielded many links that you might want to take a look at:
http://ca.search.yahoo.com/search?p=What+is+the+fastest+flatbed+scanner+in+the+market%3F&toggle=1&cop=mss&ei=UTF-8&fr=yfp-t-715
Again–the first factor is “how much do you have to spend?”
As for scanning a large amount of photos–there’s really no way to do them but one at a time. Unlike dedicated scanners for slides and negatives, there’s no “photo feeder” that I know of, for flatbed scanners.
And getting back to speed… I’ve found that even the fastest scanner is subject to the speed (processing power) of the computer it’s hooked up to. Furthermore, speed is also affected by the resolution at which your scanning the photo.
Example–I’ve found that scanning a 4×6 or 5×7 print at 150 to 300 dpi is pretty fast. However–scanning an 8×10 at 600 dpi slows down the process significantly. Scanning a large print at 1200 dpi slows things down to a crawl.
Like most things technological–you may find that faster speed comes with a (usually “higher”) price, so first determine how much you’re willing to spend, and then find a flatbed scanner within your range. I myself have been using a Hewlett-Packard flatbed scanner for years (and I’ve found them to be pretty reliablle, like their laser printers).
Hope this helps.
