Okay, it’s time to review another photo scanner, and today it’s the Canon CanoScan LiDE 700F. If you want a good value scanner that will make great quality scans of your photos, then this is a great one to get. It is lightweight and easy to store, and works well with all versions of Windows from XP onwards. The only real down-side worth mentioning is that it doesn’t scan quite as quickly as advertized, even on the recommended resolution. However, for most people this will be a very minor thing.

I like this scanner immensely because of the light weight, portability between machines I use, that it requires only one USB plug, and the great scanned images. I do agree with another reviewer that the cover does feel flimsy and could be broken by someone not careful but that does not concern me much even thought I carry this from room to room depending on what machine I need to use. Just use the same care as you would with your laptop and you will be fine.
I would not hesitate to recommend this scanner for high resolutions scans for people on a budget. This is a great scanner! I have no regrets having purchased this scanner…
Great scanner, but It doesn't scan slides...just film
Canon has really improved their scanning technology and the CanoScan LiDE 700F does a super job with not a lot of preparation.
The user software interface is not as intuitive as I had hoped, but the scanner makes up for this small obstacle with the handy front buttons. The film scan works beautifully and it is too bad that Canon didn’t do something to incorporate 35mm slide scanning into this model to make it a perfect flatbed scanner.
Overall, I have to give Canon a thumbs up for an affordably well made scanner.
When it comes to photo scanners, the Canon CanoScan 9950F is up there with the best of them. It’s very easy to use, and produces excellent quality scans with crips detail and deep color. It also comes with free photo editing software, so you can heal any scratches, dust or other imperfections to your photos. This scanner is ideal for any professional photographers who have lots of old negatives or slides that they want to turn into digital photos. It would also suit anyone who is keen to preserve their old photo films forever in a digital format.
The CanoScan 9950F works like a dream–it was out of the box, software installed, scanning immediately. Scanning slides took a little longer for me to figure out, partly because the very brief documentation follows procedures for 35mm film strips rather than slides as its main example. But the results are great–very high resolution (1200 dpi, can go up to 4800), clear, crisp, bright scans (the only downside is that it shows how dusty some of my slides are, but the software even has some fixes for that). And the scans are pretty quick–average of about 30 seconds per slide at 1200 dpi. Scanning paper documents is a snap, and you can do all the usual things like scan to a printer like a copy machine or to a PDF file. The USB 2.0 connection gives fast transfer rates and, unlike some of my other USB devices, putting the computer to sleep is no problem for this scanner–OS 10.4 will recognize it right after awakening. Better than expected film scans
I bought this scanner mainly for scanning old photos. The very first scan I made with it was of a >4×5 glass plate image from about the 1860′s. It was processed to be viewed as a positive image although it could have been printed in an enlarger. The surface of the plate was painted with colors of gold for jewelry and rouge cheeks and painted lips. I scanned it as a print and was amazed at the quality of the digital file. It picked up every defect on the emulsion coating the glass, all of which were easily “restored” in Photoshop. The colors that were applied by the photographer show up in the scan as he intended the image to look. That couldn’t have been done with a traditional enlarger print from the glass plate. The software that came with the scanner allows for considerable control over the image before the scan is made. With the glass plate image, I was able to bring out tones that were difficult to see when looking at the original. When it comes to photo scanners, Canon’s CanoScan 8800F really is something very special. the first thing you will notice is that it needs no warm-up time at all. This is due to the High-luminance white LED lamps, and this enables you to get started scanning your photos straight away.
The 8800F is also very easy to use, due to the simple control buttons on the front of the machine. It’s so easy just to scan your photos in and transfer them to the computer with the USB cable. You’ll also be able to get quite a lot done in a short time, due to the batch scanning ability of this scanner.
Once you see your images displayed on the screen, you will realize the true power of this scanner, and that is the resolution and color depth. The 8800F has an amazing 4800 by 9600 DPI resolution and a 48-bit color depth, meaning you will capture every detail and color shade in your original negatives.

Impressed
My CanoScan 8800F arrived from Amazon earlier than anticipated which is usual for Amazon and great for me. Setup was very easy. This scanner and its software is definitely made for VISTA. It comes with Adobe Photoshop Elements ver 5. (Yesterday I saw a copy of ver 6 on the store shelf). The included software is easy to install and performs well. However, there are no printed manuals other than the Quick Start Guide. In addition to Photoshop Elements, it comes with ArcSoft PhotoStudio ver 5.5 and ScanGear which must be installed and used if you want to scan 35mm film, slides or 126/620 film….
